Chapter Seven
Saturday, New Year's Eve, 1966
Janet thought, New Yearâs again with John at The Gossip! They approached the door. It was noisy inside. John opened the door for her. Inside it was crowded. Sam waved and smiled from across the room. In the far front corner, the banner was in place. Chairs were leaned against the table, reserving it for them. She whispered to John, "In front of the banner like last year." They worked their way through the crowd. As they approached she could tell John was suspicious. He looked at her and she smiled but said nothing. John thought about it then pushed the banner aside. Steve stood there in full dress uniform. Janet screamed and sat up in bed. â A dream! It was a dream! It was only a dream! â She could make out the cold white light of dawn around the window shade. She heard her parents' door open.
There was a hurried knock on her door, then Molly entered. "I heard you scream!" She turned on the light and went to where Janet was sitting up in bed. "Are you OK?"
Janet, "It was a dream. â Steve and John came face to face at the New Yearâs party."
Molly put her arms around her and held her. "Oh, Janet ..."
At Winthrop Place John stretched, awake enough he knew he wouldn't sleep more. Dawn was beginning to bring gentle light to his windows. He remembered the previous day with Janet. It didn't get any better than that. He checked the clock and decided to get up. It wouldn't be all that long until 7. He was meeting with Supers as a Super this morning. He chose his clothes carefully and laid them out. The smell of fresh coffee was calling him to the kitchen before shaving. He put on his robe and went out.
Mrs. Wright was writing at the table facing him. "Good morning. Come share the coffee."
John, "Good morning. How was your day off?"
Mrs. Wright, "Pretty good actually. I spent the day with friends. I'm not much for that, but I guess it was the holiday spirit. How was your day?"
John poured himself a cup of coffee. "Very good. We didn't make it the whole way but what we did was great." He sat down at the table.
Mrs. Wright, "Molly called to tell me you were out of the woods. I'd left her a number." Mrs. Wright studied him hoping for more, hesitating to press.
John, "There are times when I spend a half-hour with Janet and she turns my life upside down. Then yesterday she was the perfect companion all day, funny, attentive. We cleared rock slides off the road, drove across really old logging bridges. â She didn't need to be in charge, she didn't need to lead, she was just my perfect companion. I never know what to expect from her." John concentrated on drinking his coffee.
Mrs. Wright, "A changeable female! Imagine that."
John laughed. "Never boring!" He pushed to finish the coffee. "I have a meeting at the mill this morning.
